Using Tadpoles to Reduce
نویسنده
چکیده
A parallel variant of breadth-rst search for distributed computing is presented. The variant allows exhaustive enumeration of elements of a search space (implicitly deened graph) in which the representation of all graph nodes would otherwise require more than the total available memory. This algorithm requires the use of a tadpole data structure to partition the search space into connected subgraphs, with each subgraph stored within the memory of a single processor. Thus, graph the nodes are stored in a way that adds greater spatial locality, thereby reducing communication among processors. A parameter is deened that allows a linear tradeoo in which memory and communication are each reduced linearly as CPU time grows. The result appears to ll a gap in the literature, which has concentrated on parallel depth-rst search, but has been relatively sparse in the case of parallel breadth-rst search.

Infection deflection: hosts control parasite location with behaviour to improve tolerance.
Anti-parasite behaviour can reduce parasitic infections, but little is known about how such behaviours affect infection location within the host's body and whether parasite distribution ultimately affects tolerance of infection. To assess these questions, we exposed both anaesthetized (no behaviour) and non-anaesthetized Hyla femoralis tadpoles to plagiorchiid cercariae (larval trematodes), and...
متن کاملMelatonin effects on the melanophores in adults and tadpoles of Rana cyanophlyctis (Schneider)
Introduction: Effects of melatonin (MT) were comparatively examined on melanophores of isolated skin in adults and tadpole’s tailfin of a frog Rana cyanophlyctis. MT is generally considered as a potent melanophores aggregating hormone besides regulating the sleep wake cycle in vertebrates. Methods: Melanophore size index (MSI) was chosen as a recording parameter of the responses. Concentr...
متن کاملDaphnia predation on the amphibian chytrid fungus and its impacts on disease risk in tadpoles
Direct predation upon parasites has the potential to reduce infection in host populations. For example, the fungal parasite of amphibians, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), is commonly transmitted through a free-swimming zoospore stage that may be vulnerable to predation. Potential predators of Bd include freshwater zooplankton that graze on organisms in the water column. We tested the abili...
متن کاملMaternally derived chemical defences are an effective deterrent against some predators of poison frog tadpoles (Oophaga pumilio).
Parents defend their young in many ways, including provisioning chemical defences. Recent work in a poison frog system offers the first example of an animal that provisions its young with alkaloids after hatching or birth rather than before. But it is not yet known whether maternally derived alkaloids are an effective defence against offspring predators. We identified the predators of Oophaga p...

Kin discrimination in cannibalistic tadpoles of the Green Poison Frog, Dendrobates auratus (Anura, Dendrobatidae). Cannibalizing a related individual can reduce the inclusive fitness of the cannibal. Hence, mechanisms that allow a tadpole to recognize and modify its behavior toward kin may reduce the inclusive fitness costs of cannibalism. Alternatively, ecological factors may cause preferentia...
متن کاملAntipredator pheromones in amphibians: a review
Specific chemosignals (pheromones) have an important role in the antipredator behaviour in amphibians and other vertebrates. However, relatively little is known about the occurrence of chemical alarm cues just in amphibians. The site of chemosignals perception is vomeronasal system. The presence of the vomeronasal system in aquatic amphibians indicates that it did not arise as an adaptation to ...
